Cooking grates come in a variety of styles and materials. If your Grates need replaced, you can find an OEM style replacement, or change them to a different style or type (simply measure your existing Cooking Grates). The most common are chrome plated and porcelain coated rod. Also available are cast iron, porcelain coated cast iron, stainless steel and porcelain coated steel. Many grills are also equipped with a warming rack that rests above the primary cooking surface, which can be used for both keeping foods warm and as a cooking area when using an indirect method of cooking.

Cooking Grate Types

Chrome Cooking Grates

Generally the least expensive cooking grids. They are subject to rusting and food sticking, however should provide several years of satisfactory service. Warming racks are generally chrome plated.

Porcelain Coated Rod

Their shiny black or gray porcelain coating makes these cooking grids easier to clean and helps prevent the food from sticking. Care must be taken not to chip the porcelain coating which will expose the steel rod and allow rusting. A soft brass bristled brush should be used to clean the grids. Scraping will damage the coating. Porcelain coated grids vary in quality by the thickness of the rod and the thickness of the porcelain coating.

Stainless Steel Cooking Grates

Offering excellent rust resistance, these grids generally have a wide configuration allowing easy food handling and providing wide sear marks. They cool easily and meats may have a tendency to stick.

Cast Iron Cooking Grates

Offering the most mass, these grids have excellent searing capabilities as they retain their heat the longest. They are available with or without a porcelain coating and because they are so heavy, should last for many years. Non-porcelain coated cast iron grids require curing with vegetable oil in a manner similar to curing a cast iron skillet.

Cooking Grate Maintenance

Cleaning

Cooking grids can be cleaned by heating them in the grill with the lid closed much like using a self cleaning oven. Do not overheat your grill, and do not leave your grill unattended. A 15 minutes on HIGH is recommended by most grill manufactures. After baking, brush the loose residue from the grids with a brass bristled brush. If desired they can then be cleaned with a mild soap and water.

Vegetable Oil

Coat the cooking grids with vegetable oil before cooking. This helps prevent the food from sticking and makes cleaning easier.

Rust

There is no fix for chipped away porcelain and rusting food grids. Clean away rust and coat with vegetable oil. Do not paint cooking grids or any cooking surface.

First up is in our BBQ Repair Checklist is where the heat meets the meat. Time, heat and grease take their toll on all of your grill guts, but don’t drop cash on new grates just because they’re a little ugly. Surfaces like stainless steel rod or uncoated cast iron grids should be replaced when they become pitted or the rust is irremovable. Coated racks are a little more fickle & less durable – check for pits or blemishes in the enamel that will mess up your cooking surface.

Flavorizer bars, heat tents, ceramic rods — they’re in your grill to help heat radiate evenly and deter flare-ups. They’re also the most abused part of your grill, constantly pummeled by scorching heat from below and sizzling fat & grease from above. Life expectancy varies, but look for any flaw that’s going to let grease go down or flame sneak up. It’s time to replace hardware as soon as you see rough edges, holes, or broken rods. Radiants in good condition are a critical part of heat management.

Getting consistent & even heat on your cooking surface starts here. If your radiants are in good shape but you still have hot spots, blame your burners. Ugly is OK, but splits, cracks and holes are a path to giving up on your grill and ordering pizza. Blocked holes can usually be cleaned up with a wire brush, but you probably need to replace your burners if your radiants have been letting too much stuff pass through or they’ve been at work for more than a handful of years.

Weber has an enamel cleaning kit that works well, vegetable oil works good on cast aluminium and iron, but what about stainless finishes? We cleaned the grill above on the right with soap and water, then hit the left side with Barkeeper’s Friend. Perfect? Nope. Worth the extra 10 minutes? Absolutely. Spray and wipe with a stainless steel polish for a lasting shine and protection.
